Motorcycle Chains: Types, Selection, Maintenance and Replacement

A motorcycle chain is a roller chain that transmits power from the gearbox output shaft to the rear wheel. It wraps around a small front sprocket and a larger rear sprocket. Each link consists of inner plates, outer plates, pins, bushings, rollers and, on most modern street motorcycles, rubber sealing rings.
How a motorcycle chain works
As the engine turns the front sprocket, the chain rollers engage the sprocket teeth and pull the rear sprocket. This converts engine torque into rear-wheel rotation. The final drive ratio is determined by the number of teeth on the front and rear sprockets, while the chain mainly transmits force and movement. A motorcycle chain must handle high tensile loads, rapid acceleration, suspension movement, dirt and weather exposure.

Non-sealed chains are lighter and cheaper, but they require more frequent lubrication and wear faster in dirty conditions. O-ring and X-ring chains retain factory grease between pins and bushings while keeping dirt out. X-ring chains usually have two sealing lips, which can reduce friction while maintaining good sealing.
Chain size and selection
Common motorcycle chain sizes include 520, 525 and 530. The first digit refers to pitch in eighths of an inch, so a 5 means 5/8 inch pitch. The second and third digits describe nominal width: 20 means 1/4 inch, 25 means 5/16 inch, and 30 means 3/8 inch. Larger sizes are generally stronger but heavier.
Always follow the chain size recommended in the owner’s manual. Some riders fit a narrower 520 chain to reduce weight, but this can lower fatigue life if the chain is not strong enough for the engine torque and vehicle weight. The chain must also have the correct number of links and be matched to the front and rear sprockets.
Installation and adjustment
Chain slack must be checked according to the motorcycle manufacturer’s specification. A typical range is around 20 to 40 mm of vertical movement at the midpoint between the sprockets, but this varies by model.
Check slack with the motorcycle on a paddock stand or side stand, in neutral, and rotate the rear wheel to find the tightest point in the chain. Measure the tightest point and adjust there.
A chain that is too tight puts excessive load on the countershaft bearing, rear wheel bearing and chain pins. A chain that is too loose can slap, strike the swingarm, jump teeth or derail.
Rear wheel alignment is equally important. Axle adjuster marks are not always accurate. Use a chain alignment tool or measure from the swingarm pivot to the axle center on both sides. Misalignment causes uneven sprocket wear, chain noise and premature failure.
Master links
Most street and high-power motorcycles should use a rivet-type master link rather than a clip-type master link. A clip can be thrown off at high speed if not fitted correctly. Rivet links require a proper chain riveting tool. After installation, check the riveted link for free movement and correct plate spacing.
Lubrication and cleaning
Sealed chains still need external lubrication. The O-rings or X-rings protect internal grease, but the rollers, sprocket faces and seals still need a protective film.
Clean the chain before lubricating. Use a chain-specific cleaner or kerosene with a soft brush. Avoid wire brushes and strong solvents that can damage rubber seals. High-pressure washing directly at the seals should also be avoided.
Lubricate after a ride when the chain is warm. Apply lubricant to the inside of the lower run while rotating the rear wheel slowly. Wait a few minutes, then wipe away excess to reduce fling.
Recommended maintenance intervals vary by conditions, but many riders clean and lubricate every 400 to 800 km. In rain, dust or off-road use, service the chain more often.
Wear detection
A motorcycle chain does not stretch like a rubber band. The pins, bushings and rollers wear, which increases the distance between links and makes the chain appear to stretch.
Check for these signs:
- Excessive slack that requires frequent adjustment
- Tight spots when rotating the rear wheel
- Kinked links that do not move freely
- Cracked or damaged plates
- Missing, cracked or displaced O-rings or X-rings
- Rust pitting
- Sprocket teeth that look hooked or shark-fin shaped
If the chain has reached its service limit, replace it. Do not install a new chain on worn sprockets. Chain and sprockets wear together, so replacing them as a set improves fit, reduces noise and extends service life.

Maintenance schedule
Inspect chain slack at least once a month. Clean and lubricate every 400 to 800 km under normal street riding, and more often in wet, dusty or off-road conditions. Check sprockets whenever replacing a rear tire. After any chain adjustment or wheel removal, recheck alignment and ride gently until the chain settles.
A properly selected, correctly adjusted and regularly lubricated motorcycle chain provides reliable power delivery, smoother throttle response and a longer drivetrain life. Regular inspection is the simplest way to prevent sudden chain failure and costly engine or swingarm damage.
